Nintendo Switch 2

Nintendo Switch 2 (2025): hybrid console with a 7.9-inch LCD, magnetic Joy-Con 2 controllers, 4K output when docked and Switch backward compatibility.

History of the Nintendo Switch 2

Nintendo began early work on its next console shortly after the Switch launched. Formal development, under the codename "Ounce", started in 2019, led by Kouichi Kawamoto, Takuhiro Dohta and Tetsuya Sasaki. The team chose to keep the hybrid concept and put its effort into performance. Playing existing Switch games was a goal from the outset: it was solved with a mix of software and hardware emulation, and it shaped the name, which won out over "Super Nintendo Switch".

The company revealed the console on January 16, 2025, and gave full details in a Nintendo Direct on April 2. It went on sale on June 5, 2025, in Japan, North America, most of Europe and other markets, at €469 in the eurozone and US$449.99 in the United States. Japan also got a cheaper model limited to the Japanese language. Critics liked the social features and technical upgrades but faulted the price of the hardware and games. It became Nintendo's fastest-selling console.

Mario Kart World launched alongside it and was also sold in a bundle with the system. Most Switch games run on the new hardware, and some received a "Nintendo Switch 2 Edition" with technical upgrades or extra content. The console introduced GameChat, for voice chat with screen and camera sharing, and Game-Key Cards, which hold only a licence and require the game to be downloaded. Nintendo Switch Online added GameCube titles exclusive to Switch 2.

The console remains on sale. In March 2026 Nintendo sued the US government over the tariffs that hit the system. In May it announced a price rise tied to the global memory shortage: ¥59,980 in Japan from May 25 and €499.99 in other territories from September 1, 2026. To meet European right-to-repair rules, from July 2026 it began shipping a revision in Europe with user-replaceable batteries.
