History of Beenox

Dominique Brown founded Beenox in Quebec City, Canada, in May 2000 to make games for the Mac, bringing in four former colleagues from MegaToon. The name came from a random word he had jotted in a notebook during chemistry class while looking for names with an x in them. Its first game was Pillars of Garendall (2001), made with Ambrosia Software. In 2003, facing cash flow problems, it turned to converting other companies' games to Mac and PC.

It produced Mac or Windows versions of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 and 4, Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness, Homeworld 2, Star Wars: Battlefront and Myst V: End of Ages. Activision bought the studio on 25 May 2005. In 2007 it returned to original development with the console versions of Bee Movie Game and handled the Windows version of Spider-Man: Friend or Foe. Monsters vs. Aliens and Guitar Hero Smash Hits followed in 2009.

After Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions (2010), Activision made it the lead studio for its Spider-Man games, leading to Spider-Man: Edge of Time (2011), The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014). Brown left in December 2012, and the studio moved on to supporting Activision's biggest brands: it co-developed Skylanders games and, with Mercenary Technology, brought Call of Duty: Black Ops III to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2015.

In 2019 it released Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled, a new version of the PlayStation kart racer, and in 2020 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered. Since then it has worked mainly on Call of Duty: it took part in Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile (2024) and has led the Windows versions of Black Ops 6, Black Ops 7 and Modern Warfare 4. In 2022 it announced a second office in Montreal, led by Nour Polloni. It remains an Activision subsidiary.
