History of Dimps

Dimps is a Japanese studio based in Osaka, with a second office in Tokyo. It was founded on 6 March 2000, after Takashi Nishiyama, co-creator of Street Fighter, Fatal Fury, Art of Fighting and The King of Fighters, resigned from SNK. Tokyo companies offered him jobs, but he chose to start his own company in Osaka so his team and their families would not have to move. The founders included former SNK and Capcom staff such as Hiroshi Matsumoto.

The company was first called Sokiac and later renamed Dimps, short for 'Digital Multi-Platforms', to reflect its aim of making games across many genres and platforms. It started out with capital from Sammy, Bandai, Sony Computer Entertainment and Sega. For Sega it made Sonic Advance (2001) and its two sequels on Game Boy Advance, followed by Sonic Rush (2005) on Nintendo DS. For Bandai it developed the Dragon Ball Z: Budokai series (2002) on PlayStation 2 and GameCube, and later Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budokai on PSP.

In 2008 it co-developed Street Fighter IV with Capcom, and stayed with the series for Super Street Fighter IV (2010), Street Fighter X Tekken (2012) and Street Fighter V (2016). Sonic remained part of its work too, with Sonic the Hedgehog 4, Sonic Colors for Nintendo DS, and Sonic Generations and Sonic Lost World for Nintendo 3DS. With Bandai Namco it made Dragon Ball Xenoverse (2015), Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 (2016) and the mobile game Dragon Ball Legends (2018).

Takashi Nishiyama is its president and one of its owners, alongside Bandai Namco Holdings, Sony Interactive Entertainment and an employee stock-sharing group. Its subsidiaries include Safari Games. Recent work includes Dragon Ball: The Breakers (2022), Sword Art Online: Fractured Daydream (2024) and Freedom Wars Remastered (2025), and its list of games includes Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3, scheduled for 2027.
