History of Gameloft

Gameloft was founded in Paris on 14 December 1999 by Michel Guillemot, one of the five founders of Ubisoft, and its first game was Valdo and the Pirates. In 2000 it opened its Montreal, Barcelona and Bucharest studios, which are still the group's oldest, and over that decade it opened more than twenty studios in different countries.

It quickly became the world leader in mobile phone games, a position it held until the mid-2010s. In 2004 Gameloft Montreal released Asphalt Urban GT, the first game in its racing series, and in 2006 came Gangstar: Crime City, a GTA-style open world scaled down for the phones of the time. Dungeon Hunter, N.O.V.A. and Modern Combat all debuted in 2009, and in 2013 Gameloft Barcelona released Despicable Me: Minion Rush and Asphalt 8: Airborne.

From late 2014, fierce competition and a saturated mobile market took their toll: between 2015 and 2019 it closed nearly half of its studios. In the middle of that crisis Vivendi launched a hostile bid and took control in 2016. Michel Guillemot left the company and Alexandre de Rochefort, previously its finance chief, took over the running of its subsidiaries. Asphalt 9: Legends came out in 2018 and was later ported to Nintendo Switch and Steam.

The turnaround came in 2022 with Disney Dreamlight Valley, made by Gameloft Montreal, which opened its PC and console era and has become its biggest success. The Oregon Trail, from Gameloft Brisbane, also did well that year, and the same studio released Bluey's Happy Snaps in 2026. Based in Paris with ten studios, Gameloft is preparing Dragon Mania Skyhaven for 2027 and a Dungeons & Dragons game aimed at early access in September 2027.
