History of Guerrilla Games
Guerrilla Games was formed on 1 January 2000 when three Dutch studios merged: Orange Games, founded in 1993 by Jazz Jackrabbit co-designer Arjan Brussee; Digital Infinity, set up by Arnout van der Kamp in 1995; and Martin de Ronde's Formula Game Development. It was first called Lost Boys Games and belonged to Lost Boys, the multimedia group owned by Michiel Mol. In 2001 it was spun off as an independent company, still owned by Mol, with Hermen Hulst as managing director.
It started out making Game Boy Color games with its own characters but could not find a publisher, so it turned to work-for-hire handheld titles: Dizzy's Candy Quest (2001), Rhino Rumble (2002), Black Belt Challenge (2002) and Invader (2002). In 2003 Media Republic, another of Mol's companies, bought 75% of the studio, which was renamed Guerrilla Games that July. The following year it released Killzone for PlayStation 2 and Shellshock: Nam '67 for Eidos Interactive.
In March 2004 it signed a deal to develop only for Sony consoles, and in December 2005 Sony Computer Entertainment bought the whole studio. Under Sony it made Killzone: Liberation (2006) for PSP, then Killzone 2 (2009) and Killzone 3 (2011) for PlayStation 3. At E3 2015 it unveiled a new series starring the young hunter Aloy: Horizon Zero Dawn (2017) for PlayStation 4 was widely praised, got The Frozen Wilds expansion the same year and came to PC in 2020.
The sequel, Horizon Forbidden West (2022), received the Burning Shores expansion on PlayStation 5 in 2023, and with Firesprite the studio worked on Horizon Call of the Mountain for PlayStation VR2. Guerrilla is still based in Amsterdam as part of PlayStation Studios and builds its games on its own Decima engine, which Kojima Productions also uses for Death Stranding. Hulst moved up to lead Worldwide Studios in 2019, and since 2023 Jan-Bart van Beek, Joel Eschler and Hella Schmidt have run the studio.
