History of Insomniac Games
Ted Price founded the studio in February 1994 as Xtreme Software and in 1995 had to rename it because another company used the same name: that is how Insomniac Games was born. Its first game, Disruptor (1996), a first-person shooter that started on the 3DO and ended up on PlayStation, was well reviewed but sold poorly and nearly bankrupted the studio.
With Universal Interactive and Mark Cerny it carried on and created Spyro the Dragon (1998), which got two sequels in two years. On PlayStation 2 it launched Ratchet & Clank and on PlayStation 3 the Resistance series, two franchises that brought critical and commercial success while working closely with Sony.
For years it stayed independent and also worked with other publishers: Fuse (2013) with Electronic Arts, Sunset Overdrive (2014) with Microsoft and several virtual reality projects. In 2016 it released a remake of the first Ratchet & Clank and in 2018 its first licensed game, Marvel's Spider-Man.
Sony acquired the studio in 2019 and it became part of PlayStation Studios. Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales (2020) and Marvel's Spider-Man 2 (2023) followed, and its next project is Marvel's Wolverine for PlayStation 5. It is based in Burbank, California.
