History of Omega Force
Omega Force is a Japanese studio within Koei Tecmo. Akihiro Suzuki and Kenichi Ogasawara founded it in 1996 as Koei's fourth business division, tasked with broadening a catalogue built on strategy and simulation series such as Romance of the Three Kingdoms and Nobunaga's Ambition. Koei asked Ogasawara for a 3D action game that would make use of the PlayStation's capabilities; that project produced both Dynasty Warriors and the team itself.
It was originally going to be named after the letter Z, but the idea was dropped because Z can carry other meanings outside Japan. To keep the last letter, the team picked the Greek omega, and because the name clashed with the watchmaker Omega, it added 'Force', which sounds like 'fourth' in Japanese, a nod to its division number. In 1999 Koei again handed it something outside its usual field: WinBack for the Nintendo 64, a third-person shooter that pioneered the use of cover.
Its main series is Warriors, known in Japan as Musō, which takes in Dynasty Warriors, Samurai Warriors, Warriors Orochi, a crossover of the two, and One Piece: Pirate Warriors, among others. Dynasty Warriors 9 (2018) swapped the series' arena-based combat for an open world. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity (2020), its third collaboration with Nintendo, became the best-selling Warriors game and the studio's best-selling title.
In 2022 Omega Force and Koei Tecmo announced a partnership with Electronic Arts to publish Wild Hearts under the EA Originals label. The game was unveiled on 23 September 2022. Its director, Kotaro Hirata, said the team wanted a second strong series alongside Dynasty Warriors and a wider international audience. Omega Force remains a division of Koei Tecmo.
