History of Red Storm Entertainment

Red Storm Entertainment grew out of novelist Tom Clancy's work with Virtus Corporation, a company in Cary, North Carolina, with which he had made the game Tom Clancy's SSN. On 13 November 1996, the day after that game came out, they announced the new studio, which took in Virtus Studios. The name came from Clancy's novel Red Storm Rising. Clancy became chairman, and Doug Littlejohns, a retired Royal Navy commodore, president and chief executive.

Its first game was Tom Clancy's Politika (1997). Dominant Species, one of the first 3D real-time strategy games, followed, but what made its name was Rainbow Six (1998), a tactical first-person shooter that rewarded patience and planning, developed alongside the novel of the same name. Next came the Eagle Watch mission pack, the sequel Rogue Spear (2000) and strategy games such as Force 21, ruthless.com and Shadow Watch.

Ubi Soft bought the studio in August 2000, when Ghost Recon was already in production. Released in 2001, it won several game of the year awards, and its Xbox version was the studio's first in-house console project. In 2003 it absorbed Sinister Games, Ubisoft's other North Carolina studio, and with Ghost Recon 2 (2004) it shifted mainly to console development. It also built the multiplayer side of both Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter games.

Later it worked on Ghost Recon: Future Soldier (2012) and The Division (2016), and moved into virtual reality with Werewolves Within (2016), Star Trek: Bridge Crew (2017) and Assassin's Creed Nexus VR (2023). Ubisoft cancelled its Splinter Cell VR game in 2022 and The Division Heartland in 2024. In March 2026, as part of Ubisoft's restructuring, the studio in Cary saw layoffs and its parent ended game development there.
