History of Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio

RGG Studio, formerly Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, is a Sega development team officially named Sega CS R&D Dept. No. 1. It traces its roots to Sega AM11, set up in 1998 and renamed AM4 in 1999, which was led by Daytona USA designer Toshihiro Nagoshi. In 2000 Sega split its development into nine semi-autonomous studios, and Nagoshi's became Amusement Vision, the smallest of them. The RGG Studio name and logo came much later, in late August 2011.

Amusement Vision struck gold with Monkey Ball, which hit Japanese arcades in June 2001 and was then reworked as Super Monkey Ball, a GameCube launch game. It also developed F-Zero GX under contract for Nintendo. In 2003 it took in Smilebit's non-sports staff, and after Sega merged with Sammy in 2004 it became part of the New Entertainment R&D department. That is where the first Like a Dragon was made, a game about the Japanese underworld that Sega's executives were unsure about and that went on to become a series.

From Yakuza 3 onwards it was known as Sega's CS1 team. The RGG logo was first used for Binary Domain in February 2012, an attempt to reach a worldwide audience that sold poorly. Yakuza 0 brought the series much wider recognition outside Japan and paved the way for the remakes Yakuza Kiwami and Yakuza Kiwami 2 and remasters of Yakuza 3, 4 and 5. Yakuza 6: The Song of Life introduced its in-house Dragon Engine. The team also made Judgment (2018) and Lost Judgment.

In October 2021 Nagoshi and producer Daisuke Sato left Sega, and the series' writer, Masayoshi Yokoyama, took over as studio head. Yokoyama stresses that RGG is not a separate company but a nickname for a team inside Sega. Since 2024 Sega AM2 has also come under RGG, which has a new Virtua Fighter in development. In February 2026 it released Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties, a remake of Yakuza 3, and the Super Monkey Ball series has returned with Banana Blitz HD and Banana Mania.
