History of SCE London Studio

London Studio, also known as SCEE London Studio, was a British Sony studio based in London. It was formed in 2002 by merging two teams: SCEE Studio Camden, once a division of Psygnosis, and Team Soho, the developer of The Getaway. It sat under Sony Computer Entertainment until 2005 and under PlayStation Studios after that. Its early PlayStation 2 games included This Is Football 2003 (2002) and EyeToy: Play (2003), built for the EyeToy camera.

Its main series was SingStar (2004), a karaoke game with many instalments on PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 that helped the console reach beyond its usual audience of young male players. The studio also made a long run of EyeToy games, such as EyeToy: Groove and EyePet (2009), and helped on Killzone 2 and LittleBigPlanet. Sony cancelled two of its PlayStation 3 projects, Eight Days and a sequel to The Getaway, to move those resources to other first-party games.

Later it turned to virtual reality. It built its own VR rendering technology, LSSDK, for PlayStation 4 and PC, and first used it in PlayStation VR Worlds (2016), a collection of five experiences. Reviews were mixed, but the segment called 'The London Heist' was very well received. Its follow-up was Blood & Truth (2019), which in May that year became the first VR game to reach number one in the UK retail sales chart.

In 2022 the studio was working on a cooperative PlayStation 5 game set in a modern fantasy London and playable without a VR headset, which studio head Tara Saunders called its most ambitious project so far. In February 2024 Sony announced plans to close it as part of wider job cuts, and London Studio shut down in May 2024, having released more than 60 titles.
