History of Spike

Spike started out in December 1989 as Mizuki Ltd., became Mizuki Co., Ltd. in October 1991 and took the name Spike Co., Ltd. in April 1997. It was based in Meguro, Tokyo. Much of its staff came from Human Entertainment, and when Human ceased operations Spike acquired its Fire Pro Wrestling series. In March 1999 it sold its book publishing business to Aspect, and later that year it was bought by Sammy.

In November 1999 it set up Vaill, a development subsidiary made up of former Human staff, which was folded back into Spike in July 2001; Vaill made Fire Pro Wrestling A (2001) for Game Boy Advance. In those years Spike worked mainly as a publisher in Japan, releasing Acquire's Way of the Samurai (2002), Grasshopper Manufacture's Michigan: Report from Hell (2004) and the Kenka Bancho series, along with in-house games such as King of Colosseum (2002).

Dwango bought Spike in November 2005. That year saw Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi, published by Bandai, the first of several Dragon Ball games it developed, including Raging Blast (2009) and Ultimate Tenkaichi (2011). It also published Chunsoft's 428: Shibuya Scramble (2009) and 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors (2009), as well as its own Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc (2010). In April 2012 it merged with its sister company Chunsoft to form Spike Chunsoft, with Conception and Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair still in development.
