Sumo Digital

Sumo Digital is a British studio based in Sheffield, England. It was founded in 2003 by Carl Cavers, Paul Porter, Darren Mills and James North-Hearn, four members of the former management team of Infogrames Sheffield House, after that company was closed down. It began by porting other studios' games, such as OutRun 2 and OutRun 2 SP (2004), before moving on to development work on titles such as Virtua Tennis: World Tour (2005) and OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast (2006).

In 2007 it opened a studio in India, Sumo India, and that year Foundation 9 Entertainment announced it was buying the company; North-Hearn went on to run Foundation 9's European operations and became its chief executive in March 2008. This period produced Sega Superstars Tennis (2008), Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing (2010), Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed (2012) and LittleBigPlanet 3 (2014). In November 2014 its management bought the company back from Foundation 9, backed by NorthEdge Capital.

It opened a third studio in Nottingham in 2016 and released Snake Pass in 2017. Its parent, Sumo Group, was formed and floated in December 2017, and a string of acquisitions followed: CCP Newcastle and The Chinese Room (2018), Red Kite Games (2019), Lab42 (2020) and the Polish studio PixelAnt Games (2021). It also opened sites in Leamington Spa and Warrington. Those years brought Crackdown 3 and Team Sonic Racing (2019), Sackboy: A Big Adventure (2020) and Hood: Outlaws & Legends (2021).

Sumo Digital also supports other studios on games such as Hitman, Forza Horizon 5 and Hogwarts Legacy, and since 2024 has co-developed the major Warframe updates with Digital Extremes. In February 2025 it dropped plans to make its own intellectual property, and in July it sold The Chinese Room in a management buyout that made that studio independent again. Its 2026 list includes A Storied Life: Tabitha and the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Fallout 4: Anniversary Edition.
