History of Supermassive Games
Supermassive Games was founded in 2008 in Guildford, England, by Pete Samuels, who had previously worked at Psygnosis and Electronic Arts. The studio signed up as a second-party developer for Sony and began with downloadable content for Media Molecule's LittleBigPlanet and games for the PlayStation Move controller, such as Sackboy's Prehistoric Moves and Start the Party!. Almost all of its games from that period came out only on Sony platforms.
With the BBC it released Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock (2012), meant as the first part of a trilogy that was cancelled after a poor reception, and Wonderbook: Walking with Dinosaurs (2013). Until Dawn also started life as a PlayStation Move game, but was reworked for PlayStation 4 without motion controls. The interactive horror movie, inspired by slasher films, came out in 2015 and became a surprise hit for Sony.
Next came two PlayStation VR spin-offs, Until Dawn: Rush of Blood and The Inpatient, and the shooter Bravo Team, which critics panned. The studio then teamed up with Bandai Namco Entertainment on The Dark Pictures Anthology, a horror series that also comes to Windows and Xbox. Its first season is made up of Man of Medan (2019), Little Hope (2020), House of Ashes (2021) and The Devil in Me (2022). That last year also saw The Quarry, a spiritual successor to Until Dawn.
Nordisk Games, the video game arm of Danish company Nordisk Film, bought a 30.7% stake in March 2021 and the rest of the studio in July 2022. In January 2024 it emerged that the co-founders had left, and the following month the studio announced layoffs. It developed The Casting of Frank Stone for Behaviour Interactive, after making The Quarry for 2K.
