History of Traveller's Tales
Jon Burton and Andy Ingram founded Traveller's Tales in 1989. Based in Knutsford, Cheshire, the studio began by working with Psygnosis on games that stood out for their 3D effects. The first was Leander, also known as The Legend of Galahad, followed by an adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula and original titles such as Puggsy and Rascal.
A deal between Psygnosis, Sony Imagesoft and Disney opened the door to Disney licences: Mickey Mania: The Timeless Adventures of Mickey Mouse and several games based on Pixar films, including Toy Story, A Bug's Life, Toy Story 2: Buzz Lightyear to the Rescue and Finding Nemo. In the 1990s and early 2000s it was best known for working with Sega and Sonic Team on Sonic 3D Blast and Sonic R. It also made Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex, Crash Twinsanity, two Narnia games and Super Monkey Ball Adventure.
In 2004 it started work on Lego Star Wars: The Video Game with Giant Interactive Entertainment, which held the exclusive rights to Lego video games. Traveller's Tales bought Giant in 2005 and the two merged into TT Games, with Traveller's Tales as its development arm. Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment acquired the company in November 2007, and after The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2008) the studio worked only on Lego games. It won two BAFTAs, for Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy and Lego Batman: The Videogame.
In 2015 it moved into toys-to-life with Lego Dimensions, which was discontinued in October 2017. On 11 December 2018 the studio was renamed TT Games Studios. Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga was the only game built on NTT, a troubled in-house engine; a 2022 Polygon report described heavy crunch during its development, and the studio has switched to Unreal Engine for its future projects.
