History of Ubisoft Montreal
Ubisoft Montreal, legally Ubisoft Divertissements Inc., was founded on 25 April 1997. Ubisoft had gone public in 1996 and wanted to grow beyond France, and a studio in Quebec offered French-speaking staff and easy access to the US market. The Quebec and Canadian governments split a per-employee subsidy to create 500 jobs for young people, and the studio opened in the Peck Building, a former textile factory in the Mile End neighbourhood.
It started with 50 people, half of them from the Montreuil headquarters, and little game development experience. Its first projects were licensed children's games such as Donald Duck: Goin' Quackers and the Playmobil titles, which sold well enough to let it build its own brands. The breakthrough came with Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell (2002), built from The Drift, a project Ubisoft had halted in New York, and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (2003), which took the series into 3D with Jordan Mechner advising on the story.
A team that began work on a next-generation Prince of Persia in 2004 ended up creating a new series instead: Assassin's Creed (2007). Ubisoft also handed the studio the console versions of Far Cry, work that produced its own Dunia engine and Far Cry 2 (2008). Watch Dogs (2014), an urban open world built around hacking, and For Honor (2017), its first game with seasonal content, followed.
In 2013 it absorbed THQ Montreal. In July 2020, amid a wave of sexual misconduct allegations across Ubisoft, chief executive Yannis Mallat left the company and was replaced by Christophe Derennes. After Ubisoft arrived, other publishers such as Electronic Arts and Warner Bros. opened studios in Montreal. The studio released Assassin's Creed Shadows in 2025 and is working on several titles, among them Assassin's Creed Hexe.
