History of Virtuos
Virtuos was established in Shanghai, China, in December 2004 and since 2018 its headquarters have been in Fusionopolis, Singapore. It does not make original games of its own: it works as an external developer for other companies, providing art production and development for consoles, PC and mobile. It opened a Paris office in July 2005, took investment from Legend Capital in 2006 and added offices in Chengdu and Vancouver in 2008. It also made 3D art for the film Terminator Salvation (2009).
It entered Japan in 2009 through a partnership with Kyos and in 2010 began offering work-for-hire game development. From that period came its PlayStation Network port of The Price is Right and Monster Jam: Path of Destruction. In 2011 it signed a deal with Tencent and bought Sparx* Animation Studios. It brought XCOM: Enemy Unknown to iOS in 2013, a version that won a Golden Joystick for best mobile and tablet game, and in 2014 it ported Final Fantasy X and X-2 to PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita.
In 2018 it raised 15 million dollars and set up its headquarters and an R&D centre in Singapore. It provided art support on Horizon Zero Dawn (2017) and Horizon Forbidden West (2022), and in 2020 ported the former to Windows. That year it also brought XCOM 2 and The Outer Worlds to Switch, followed in 2022 by NieR:Automata The End of YoRHa Edition. Baring Private Equity Asia invested 150 million in 2021, and in 2022 it bought Volmi Games in Kyiv and Glass Egg in Ho Chi Minh City.
In 2023 Konami confirmed that Virtuos was helping develop Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater, the remake of Metal Gear Solid 3, and the same year saw its remaster The Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice Edition. In December 2024 CD Projekt revealed that Virtuos had co-developed an update for Cyberpunk 2077. It has kept buying studios, among them Beyond-FX, Third Kind Games and Pipeworks, and in July 2025 it announced layoffs. It has studios across Asia, Europe and North America.
