Game Boy Micro

Miniaturised model with a metal shell, swappable faceplates and a backlit screen; it cannot play Game Boy or Game Boy Color games.

Nintendo began discussing a smaller Game Boy in 2004 and developed it under the codename Oxy, testing how small it could go and choosing a metal casing that was unusual for the company. Reggie Fils-Aimé unveiled it at E3 on May 17, 2005. It launched in Japan on September 13, in North America on September 19 and in Europe on November 4, 2005; in China it was sold as the iQue Game Boy Micro.

It measures 50 × 101 × 17.2 mm, weighs 80 grams and has a 2-inch backlit screen with five brightness levels, a rechargeable battery and a 3.5 mm headphone jack. Its decorative faceplates can be swapped. Although it keeps the 8-bit processor, it lacks the rest of the hardware needed for Game Boy and Game Boy Color games. It cost US$99, against US$79 for the SP, missed Nintendo's sales targets and was discontinued in 2008.
