PlayStation 4 Pro
2016 version with a 4.2-teraflop GPU, faster CPU and checkerboard rendering to play games in 4K and improve PlayStation VR.
Sony confirmed on June 10, 2016, that a more powerful model, codenamed Neo, was in development. It was unveiled on September 7 as the PlayStation 4 Pro (CUH-7000) and launched worldwide on November 10, 2016, at $399, €399 and £349. It has a 4.2-teraflop GPU with hardware support for checkerboard rendering, a higher CPU clock and 1 GB of DDR3 for background apps. It can stream 4K video but does not play Ultra HD Blu-ray discs.
Mark Cerny explained that Sony could not reach 4K by brute force without raising size and cost. Instead the console relies on techniques such as checkerboard rendering, which draws only part of the image and fills in the rest with algorithms. Games labeled PS4 Pro Enhanced get specific improvements, and Boost Mode, added in system software 4.5, raises clock speeds for other games. The CUH-7100 revision followed in late 2017 and the CUH-7200 in October 2018.
