Xbox Series S
The small, white, digital-only model: same CPU, a 4-teraflop GPU, 10 GB of GDDR6, a 512 GB SSD and a 1440p target.
Its codename was Project Lockhart, after the city of Lockhart, Texas. Microsoft announced it on September 8, 2020, and later pointed out that it had already sat unannounced in the background of July videos with Phil Spencer. It was designed to fit in a backpack: about 60% smaller than the Series X, measuring 275 × 151 × 63.5 mm. It came in matte white with a matching controller and launched on November 10, 2020, at $299.
It uses the Series X CPU at slightly lower clocks, an RDNA 2 GPU with 20 compute units and about 4 teraflops, and 10 GB of GDDR6. Its 512 GB SSD leaves 364 GB free. There is no disc drive, so all games come from the digital store. It targets 1440p at 60 fps, with 4K upscaling. Some studios struggled with its limits: Larian shipped Baldur's Gate 3 on Xbox without split-screen in 2023 and added it to the Series S in January 2025.
