History of Aspyr Media

Aspyr Media was founded in 1996 by Michael Rogers and Ted Staloch in Austin, Texas. Staloch had a background in sales and marketing and Rogers had worked with TechWorks; both noticed how few games were available to Mac owners and set out to change that. The name is pronounced 'aspire': they wanted something about aspiring to be great that was also easy to remember. The company made its name porting Windows games to the Mac.

In 2005 it became a publisher and developer for several platforms with Stubbs the Zombie, made with Alex Seropian's Wideload Games for Mac, Windows and Xbox. In 2014 it started porting games to Linux, including Civilization V, Civilization VI, Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. In 2015 it released Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic on iOS, then Jade Empire on iOS and Android, updated Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords and published Fahrenheit: Indigo Prophecy Remastered.

Embracer Group bought Aspyr in February 2021 and placed it within Saber Interactive. That September it was announced that Aspyr was working on a remake of Knights of the Old Republic for Windows and PlayStation 5, but in August 2022 Embracer confirmed the project had moved to another studio. In April 2022 Embracer acquired Beamdog, whose MythForce Aspyr was publishing, and made it an Aspyr subsidiary.

In 2024 it released Tomb Raider I–III Remastered with Crystal Dynamics on 14 February, and on 14 March Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection, bringing back the first two Battlefront games. That same month Embracer sold Saber Interactive, but Aspyr was left out of the deal and became a direct Embracer subsidiary. It is still based in Austin, and its catalogue includes Sid Meier's Civilization VI and re-releases of Lucasfilm Games classics.
