Nintendo DSi

Third version with two cameras, 3.25-inch screens, more memory, an SD slot and a digital store, but no Game Boy Advance slot.

Development began in late 2006, with Masato Kuwahara as project leader. Satoru Iwata likened the touchscreen to the sense of touch and the microphone to ears, and a colleague suggested giving it "eyes": hence the two VGA cameras. An early design with two card slots was dropped because of its size, and the Game Boy Advance slot was removed to make the system thinner. The "i" in the name stands for the individual user and for the cameras' eyes.

It launched in Japan on November 1, 2008, in Australia on April 2, 2009, in Europe on April 3 and in North America on April 5. It has 3.25-inch screens, an ARM9 at 133 MHz, 16 MB of RAM, 256 MB of internal storage and an SD slot. It introduced the Nintendo DSi Shop with DSiWare games, and region locking for its own software. Critics liked the new features but regretted the lack of exclusive games and the loss of the Game Boy Advance slot.
