New-Style Super NES / Super Famicom Jr.
Smaller, cost-reduced model from 1997 in the Americas and 1998 in Japan, with the hardware on a single chip. It never reached Europe.
Late in the console's life, Nintendo released a cost-reduced version, called the New-Style Super NES in the Americas and the Super Famicom Jr. in Japan. It was designed by Lance Barr, who blended features of the American and Japanese models into a smaller body. It is nearly identical in both regions, differing only in the cartridge slot shape and the buttons, purple in the Americas and grey in Japan. Inside, the hardware is consolidated into a system-on-chip. It was not sold in Europe.
The power and reset buttons move to the left side, and the eject button and power light are gone. It loses the bottom expansion port, so it cannot use the Satellaview, and the internal RF modulator. Its output is composite video only, though RGB and S-Video can be restored with a modification. It launched in North America in October 1997 at US$99.95 with Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, and in Japan on March 27, 1998, at ¥7,800.
