Xbox One
Xbox One: Microsoft's third console (2013), plus the One S and One X revisions. Specifications, models, special editions and timeline.
History of the Xbox One
The Xbox 360's successor was developed under the codename Durango, with developer kits available by mid-2012. Microsoft unveiled it on May 21, 2013, as a home entertainment hub, focusing far more on television than on games. Its processor returned to the x86 architecture of the original Xbox: an AMD APU with eight Jaguar cores. The name was meant to suggest one device that does everything.
The original plan required an internet check every 24 hours and restricted game resale. The backlash was so strong that Microsoft reversed course on June 19, 2013. Kinect also stopped being mandatory. The console launched on November 22, 2013, in 13 markets, at $499 with the Kinect sensor included. Japan and further European countries followed in September 2014.
A model without Kinect, $100 cheaper, arrived in June 2014. Reviewers praised the controller and quiet running, but not the interface. The console was criticised for having fewer exclusives than PlayStation 4. In response, Microsoft added backward compatibility with Xbox 360 games in 2015 and original Xbox games in 2017. It also launched Xbox Game Pass in 2017 and brought its games to Windows 10 through Xbox Play Anywhere.
The smaller Xbox One S, with 4K video and HDR, arrived in 2016. The Xbox One X, built for 4K gaming, followed in 2017. From October 2015 Microsoft stopped publishing sales figures. Kinect was dropped from the Xbox line in 2017. Production of the whole family ended during 2020, ahead of the Xbox Series X and Series S.
