Nintendo 2DS

Entry-level model with no 3D and no hinge, a one-piece slate design, a mono speaker and the same hardware as the 3DS.

Announced on August 28, 2013, the 2DS is the family's entry-level model. It launched in North America, Europe and Australia on October 12, 2013, the same day as Pokémon X and Y, for US$129.99 against US$169.99 for the 3DS. Reggie Fils-Aimé said it was aimed mainly at children under seven, whom Nintendo advised not to use the 3D effect. It did not reach Japan until February 27, 2016.

It keeps the 3DS's processor, memory and compatibility but drops 3D and the clamshell: it is a rigid slate with a single physical screen split in two, a sleep-mode switch and one mono speaker. It retains the two outer cameras for taking 3D photos. Critics liked its price, sturdiness and comfort, and criticised its looks, sound and battery life.
